A Zucchini By Any Other Name...Is Not Acorn Squash

I say zucchini, you say courgette. Or marrow.

The other day my husband came home from the Farmers Market and presented me with a half dozen beautiful round zucchini, resulting in a very convoluted conversation.

Him: Skorsies!
Me: Huh?
Him: I found skorsies at the Farmers Market.
Me: What?
Him: Skorsies. South African gem squash.
Me: Those are round zucchini.
Husband: These are courgette?
Me: What?
Husband: Courgette -- summer squash. You know, marrow.
Me: Ah, right. Well, these are round zucchini, er, marrow. Not acorn squash. (Ramble on about seasonal squash varieties and how they're a fruit....blah blah blah.)
Him: Why are you bringing acorn squash into this?
Me: Aren't gem squash, er, skorsies, the same as acorn squash?
Him: Huh?

How about we just say that there are many varieties of, and names for, squash, and leave it at that.

Ah, but wait! I have to tell you what I did with those beautiful little round zucchini! Which, by the way, we'd be calling tondo di piacenza were we having this conversation in Italy. Oy.

To be continued...

(Hint: my husband thought I was making bobotie, but I wasn't.)
